Tips For Your Home In Extreme Cold Weather
Here are some tips for your home when it gets VERY cold outside. Some of these you can take care of yourself, while others you will have to hire a professional. Remember, if you need some help, you can always give us a call!
Don’t Set Back Your Thermostat
In extreme weather, it’s typically best not to lower your thermostat. Given the single digits that are expected next week, it can take a long time to raise the temperature in your home. Temperature setbacks can also lead to frozen pipes on radiator systems and can compromise your safety.
Set it at one temperature and keep it there. Most thermostats have a ‘HOLD’ function that can be used to temporarily override a set temperature schedule.
Change Your Air Filter
Most air filters are meant to be changed every 30-days. This is especially true with 1″ thick filters. Our Aprilaire filters, and some 4″ air filters, are usable for 6-12 months. Be sure your system air filters are clean. A dirty air filter can cause a system to break down.
We recommend buying a few air filters and having them on hand. That way you can make the change without having to run to the hardware store. Keep them stored in a closet and change your filter whenever you need to!
Schedule Regular Heating Service
The best way to get the most out of your heating system is by scheduling regular heating service. It helps improve your home comfort for one thing, but it comes with a list of benefits. It’s going to:
- Improve your heating
- Improve energy efficiency
- Lower energy bills
- Improve indoor air quality
- Lengthen the lifespan of your heating system
- Maintain your system’s warranty
If you haven’t had your heating system serviced yet this season, do it now. We recommend you have your system serviced once a year. Call us at (610) 446-7877, or click on the button below to schedule your service!
Proper Boiler Water Levels
Boiler systems heat and circulate water throughout your home. These systems utilize radiators or baseboards to heat homes. Therefore, it is critical to maintain proper water levels within these systems. Check your boiler gauge to ensure that the system has at least 12 PSI of water pressure. If not, find your boiler feed valve and add some water.
Clear Your HVAC Pipes
High efficiency heating systems do not utilize a chimney to vent exhaust. PVC is used to vent these through a building foundation. You’ll find these when you walk around your home. Be sure that snow doesn’t block these vents and that ice doesn’t build up around the PVC pi[es and potentially cause venting issues which will lead to system issues.
