Ways To Make Your Home More Energy Efficient (HVAC Edition)

There are many ways to make your home energy efficient, like replacing your lights with more efficient models or installing solar panels on your home, but for this article, I’m going to focus on HVAC tips. Here are a few ways you can keep your home warm, and reduce the amount of energy you use this winter.

Scheduling Regular HVAC Maintenance

You Should Have Your Heating And Cooling System Serviced SeparatelyScheduling routine HVAC maintenance is the best way to take care of your heating system, and also improve energy efficiency. Your heating system accounts for a large portion of the energy you consume. You can see it in your energy bills every year. As the weather gets colder and colder, your heating system has to work harder to keep the space comfortable, inevitably leading to higher energy bills.

Over the years, your HVAC system experiences normal wear and tear. This leads to less efficient operation, but if you have the system serviced every year, it can help it run more smoothly and efficiently. On top of improving your energy efficiency with routine service, this maintenance also helps keep the air cleaner, ensures the system is running safely, and also extends the lifespan of your heating system.

Routine maintenance for your heating system is the number one thing we recommend to all of our customers, and is the best way to get the most out of your heating system.

Insulating Your Home Properly

Another way to improve the efficiency of your home is to make sure it’s properly insulated. This means a few different things.

For one, seal any leaks around windows or doors. If you have cracks under the doors or windows, it’s an easy place for air to escape. You can use weatherstripping or door draft stoppers. Caulk will also work to seal windows, and ensure that no air is passing through.

You can also have a professional check your insulation and make sure that it’s keeping the house protected from outside elements. If you don’t have the house properly insulated, it’s going to stop your home from retaining heat, and makes your heating system work harder. This could mean insulating the walls and attic better. These are 2 of the most common areas for insulation to be failing.

Install A Smart Thermostat

Thermostats have gotten better and better over the years. Now, we have smart thermostats that learn more about your patterns, and how to best heat the home while using the least amount of energy possible.

Some thermostats have programs that allow you to create a schedule. Some also have advanced sensors you can place from room to room that accurately measure temperatures. A traditional thermostat sits on the wall of the living room, typically, and measures just that area. With the ability to measure each room, it will keep the system from unnecessarily heating spaces that are already comfortable.

Smart thermostats are also designed to connect to your phone or tablet, allowing you to control the temperature of your home much more easily than using the wall thermostat. Installing a smart thermostat can lower your energy usage by 3% -15%.

Change Your Ceiling Fans To Clockwise

Running your ceiling fan on a low speed, spinning clockwise, can create an updraft that pushes warm air from the ceiling back down into your living space. Make sure you run it at a low setting, though, as it can cool the space off if the air is being pushed too quickly.

Upgrading Your HVAC System

Upgrading your HVAC system is a great way to improve your home, and also become more energy efficient. In our area, lots of older homes have older heating systems. Some of them may still operate, but the homeowner doesn’t realize they are wasting energy by running an old, inefficient system.

HVAC systems from over a decade ago simply don’t have the same energy-efficient technology that systems have today. On top of that, the normal wear and tear of an older HVAC system is going to cause it to run less efficiently than a newer one. Instead of running an older system in order to save money on the cost of a new installation, you may be spending more than you should on energy bills, all while pushing off the inevitable need for a replacement.
