Installing A Multi-Zone Ductless System In Ardmore, PA
This lovely home in Ardmore just turned 100 years old, and like many older homes, it had no central air conditioning system and radiators for heat. The old hydronic boiler system runs on gas and that heats water/steam that is then distributed throughout the radiator system- but these older systems are inefficient, and like most homeowners, that led the family to keeping their home colder than was comfortable, in order to keep their energy bills under control.
Problem: Their 43 year old boiler system wasn’t keeping the family comfortable in the Winter, and the family was looking for better cooling in the summer than using just window AC units.
Solution: A 5 zone ductless mini split heat pump system will provide both heating and cooling throughout the house, giving the owners greater comfort while also lowering their energy bills.
When the family called us, they were looking for greater comfort at home and they were having some issues with their 43 year old boiler system. They had been looking at whether a ductless heat pump system might be a solution, and gave us a call here at John Cipollone to see what might be possible.
Our expert team came out to look at the home and did some load calculations, to see exactly what size system might work to give the homeowners the comfort they wanted throughout the home. With one homeowner working from home every day, there was a need to keep the front office comfortable, but with the rest of the home empty, it was clear a zoned system could work well to help keep the family comfortable, while also allowing better control of when and where they were spending their energy dollars.
Why Choose Ductless Heat Pumps?
Ductless heat pump systems consist of two main parts- an outdoor air handler/condenser unit, and an indoor air distribution unit, sometimes called a cassette or head. The two parts of the system are why these units are sometimes called “mini-splits”.
Each outdoor unit can control multiple indoor units, and each indoor unit can be controlled independently, with its own thermostat, that you can control by a convenient remote, or even from a smart phone app. (You can also choose a traditional wall mounted thermostat if you like.) Each indoor unit has advanced sensors that monitor the space for heat and humidity, and will make adjustments to keep the room perfectly comfortable, adding just the touch of heating or cooling you need. This minimizes temperature swings, and helps save you money, by using the minimal amount of energy needed to maintain comfort, kind of like “cruise control” on your car.

After talking through the project, we recommended that they consider a 5 zone ductless electric heat pump system. This would give the family pinpoint control the comfort they wanted in key areas of their home- the home office, bedrooms, and family areas of the home. Each zone can be controlled and adjusted independently, or turned off or placed in standby mode when no one is home or using that portion of the home. This means you can have the comfort you want, right where you want it, without spending money to heat or cool portions of your home you’re not using.
Lower Energy Bills And Customized Comfort
Because ductless systems are so energy efficient, they give you the comfort you want using the minimal amount of energy, and that leads to energy bills that can be up to 70% less for heating and 30% less for cooling than other systems. The homeowner remarked this has made a big difference for his family. Because of their energy bills, they were always keeping their thermostat low and as a result, they weren’t always completely comfortable in their home.
Now, with ductless heating and cooling, they can bump up the thermostat a bit and the air distribution system will make sure every inch of the space is perfectly comfortable. It’s a change the whole family appreciates, and no one misses fighting about who gets to touch and choose the comfort level on the thermostat! Plus, Dad can choose one level of comfort in his office, but the kids can choose another level for the family room while their gaming or doing homework. That means everyone can be comfortable while not affecting the other areas of the home.
Ductless Mini Splits Provide Energy Savings And Improved Comfort
The new ductless heat pump systems are made to work down to -13oF, and it rarely gets that cold around here. However, many people do decide to keep their old standard heating systems in case there are extreme cold snaps. However, this family found that here in Ardmore, once their new ductless system was installed, they didn’t need to use the gas fired boiler system at all last season, even when the new heat pump was installed during a cold snap.
