Cleaning The Filters Of Your Ductless Mini Split

Cleaning The Filters Of Your Ductless Mini Split

Cleaning The Filters Of Your Ductless Mini SplitEvery HVAC system requires some sort of service. You should schedule a professional service at least once a year, but in the meantime there are things you can do to keep up with your HVAC system. In this article, we are going to go over cleaning the filters of your ductless mini split system. It’s something you can do on your own, and should do once every few months.

I have been installing and cleaning HVAC systems for years, including ductless mini splits. These systems are fairly easy to maintain, and unlike traditional HVAC systems, the filters don’t need to be completely replaced, just taken out and cleaned.

How To Clean Your Ductless Mini Split’s Filters

Cleaning your ductless mini split’s filters is a simple process you can do on your own. The entire cleaning process should only take a few minutes.

  1. Turn Off Your Mini Split – First off, turn the mini split off. You don’t want any air to be blowing when you take out your filters.
  2. Open The Front Cover – Once your unit is turned off, you are going to engage the little clips on either side of the mini split, and remove the front cover. This is going to give you access to the filters inside.
  3. Pull The Filters Out – The filters should come out with ease. Remove the filters from the mini split. Certain filters have an anti-microbial or anti-allergen filter inside. If that is in there, simply take it off, as those can’t be washed, but need to be replaced every 2 years.
  4. Wash Your Filters – Once you have the filters out, you are going to wash them. You can use a hose outside, or run them under the sink. You can use a little warm soapy water to get that dirt and gunk out of your filters.
  5. Let The Filters Dry – Once your filters are clean, let them dry off for around 20 – 30 minutes. You don’t want to put wet filters back into your mini split.
  6. Replace Your Air Filters – After the filters dry off, place them back into the mini split. There is a little track you can slide the filters into. They should click into place, and your HVAC system is good to go!

You can see from the instructions, this is a pretty basic task, but it’s one that is going to keep the air in your home cleaner, and keep your mini splits running more efficiently.

Do Mini Splits Require Regular Service?

Ductless mini splits do require regular service from a professional HVAC technician. You should have your mini split serviced at least once a year. Still, you should be performing the filter cleaning on your own once every 2 months.

You should also have a deep cleaning of your ductless mini split performed once every 2 years. This is when a technician uses a high pressure water system to clean the coils and mold out of your ductless mini split. Even when your ductless system is well maintained, there can be some buildup of dirt and debris inside the mini split. Cleaning it makes sure you are breathing the cleanest air possible, and also having a smooth running unit.
