The Costs Of New Air Conditioning In 2023

Prices For Air Conditioners Are Rising In 2023In the past few years, we went through a pandemic, and because of that, we saw a shortage in raw materials, and it lead to a shortage in AC systems. Luckily for us, we are through the worst of the supply shortage, and materials, as well as AC systems, are much more readily available than in the past.

The price of air conditioning in 2023 didn’t go down from the past years, but it also didn’t rise as sharply as it had the previous 2 years. There been a slight increase in price, and you can generally expect a new AC system to cost between $3800 – $8000. Of course, there are a number of factors that affect the price of your new AC system. Size, model, and efficiency rating are a few of the bigger factors, and we will go into it all a little further in this article!

The Costs Of New Air Conditioning In 2023

In the past few years, we went through a pandemic, and because of that, we saw a shortage in raw materials, and it lead to a shortage in AC systems. Luckily for us, we are through the worst of the supply shortage, and materials, as well as AC systems, are much more readily available than in the past.

The price of air conditioning in 2023 didn't go down from the past years, but it also didn't rise as sharply as it had the previous 2 years. There been a slight increase in price, and you can generally expect a new AC system to cost between $3800 - $8000. Of course, there are a number of factors that affect the price of your new AC system. Size, model, and efficiency rating are a few of the bigger factors, and we will go into it all a little further in this article!

As a result of so many businesses being shut down for so long,  lots of production of raw materials was stopped or slowed in 2020. In 2021 and 2022, everything opening up and everyone returning to work lead to a sharp rise in demand for raw materials like aluminum, steel, and lumber.

Now in 2023, there are still a few materials that are tough to come by, including copper, but not as many that had an impact on the HVAC industry like before. Luckily we don't use eggs to construct AC systems.

What Goes Into The Cost Of Your AC System

There are a number of factors that impact the cost of your air conditioner, like we mentioned before.

  1. Unit size and capacity: Air conditioning units come in various sizes and capacities, measured in tons or BTUs (British Thermal Units). Larger and more powerful systems are typically more expensive.
  2. System type: There are several types of air conditioning systems, such as central air, ductless mini-splits, window units, and portable units. Each type has its own cost range. Central Air Systems are usually between $4000 - $8000. Ductless mini splits tend to be a bit more, depending on the amount of units you need.
  3. Energy efficiency: More energy-efficient systems, such as those with higher SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings, often come with a higher upfront cost, but can save money on energy bills in the long run. We recently installed a heat pump that saved a homeowner about 13% on their energy bills over the summer months.
  4. Brand and quality: Top-tier brands and higher-quality systems often come with a higher price tag, but they may also offer better performance, reliability, and warranty coverage.
  5. Installation: Professional installation is a significant part of the overall cost, with factors like labor, materials, and any required modifications to your home impacting the final price. Every now and then we have to change up the ductwork to make sure it delivers air around the home properly.
  6. Location and climate: The cost of an air conditioning system can also vary depending on the region and climate where you live. For Havertown and our surrounding neighborhoods, we have all four seasons, and aren't located in a region where you need an AC to be running all year long.
  7. Additional features: Air conditioning systems may come with additional features such as air purifiers, dehumidifiers, or smart thermostats, which can increase the overall cost. These generally help you improve your comfort, and save energy in the long run.
  8. Rebates and incentives: Some governments or utility companies offer rebates and incentives for installing energy-efficient air conditioning systems, which can help offset the cost. Right now, the Inflation Reduction Act is giving incredible tax credits and even rebates on heat pumps and other energy efficient technology.
  9. Maintenance and operating costs: While not part of the initial cost, it's important to consider ongoing maintenance, repairs, and energy costs associated with operating the system over its lifespan.
  10. Warranty: A longer or more comprehensive warranty may increase the initial cost, but it can also provide peace of mind and save on repair costs down the road.

What If You Only Have A Room Or Two That Need Cooling?

Not every AC has to be replaced if it's not getting the job done. Ductless mini splits are a great way to cool spaces around your home, without sucking up energy.

What lots of people do when they have rooms that never get cool enough, is try to crank the AC to compensate. They may end up cooling the room, but it freezes out the rest of the house, and also ends up skyrocketing your energy bills.

Ductless mini splits run efficiently, using minimal energy, while allowing you to keep your traditional AC running at a reasonable level. This will make your home more comfortable, and save you in energy  bills!

What Should You Do Now?

Now that you know all this information, what are your next steps? This all depends on your current situation.

If you have a broken AC take care of it now:

If your AC isn't working, get it taken care of immediately. Going through the Summer with no AC is not the solution, and the quicker you get to it, the better off you are. Once again, we have great financing options that can set you up with an easy monthly payment for a new AC system, in case the cost is what is holding you back.

If you want to replace your system:

If you have been planning on replacing your AC system, the sooner the better, as we mentioned above. Installing energy efficient AC can help you keep energy costs down while improving the comfort in your home. We have systems in stock and can help you make the improvements to your home that you are looking for.

If your system hasn't been serviced:

We recommend once a year seasonal service for all HVAC equipment, heating and air conditioning systems. This helps maintain efficiency, avoid breakdowns, and improve your home comfort! Just like having the oil changed in your car,  regular AC service helps your air conditioning run efficiently for years.

If you haven't had your AC service yet, click here or call us at (610) 446-7877.

If your system hasn't been turned on:

Turn it on as soon as possible. Make sure that the air is cool, and the system is running properly.  If there's a problem with your system it's better to know now than in the middle of the summer when the heat is non stop.  This way we can get in there ASAP and fix the situation.

If there are no issues, you still may want to schedule your seasonal maintenance if you haven't done so, but other than that, you should be good to go!
