When Should I Get An Air Conditioner Tune Up?

When Should I Get An Air Conditioning Spring Tune-Up?

The best time for your annual air conditioner tune up is in the spring. That’s before you start using it for the season and before HVAC companies get busy during the summer months. An AC tune up costs around $185, and it can save you more money in the long run

The annual tune up for your air conditioning system is a routine maintenance service call. An HVAC technician inspects the system to make sure everything’s in good shape and working well.

They’ll also change the air filters, lubricate all the moving parts, and in general, make sure your HVAC system is ready for the summer.

Even though they’re important, however, not everyone knows to get one in the spring. People may not think they’re worth the relatively small cost or are not sure what it is in the first place.

In this article, we’ll explain:

What Do I Get With An Air Conditioner Tune Up?

A good air conditioner tune up includes dozens of specific items to check. At John Cipollone, we have different items we check depending on the system. Some of the common, and most important, aspects are:

  • Clean The Condenser Coil

  • Inspect The Blower Belt And Blower Motor

  • Inspect Wiring And Connectors

Clean The Condenser Coil

The condenser coil is one of the most critical parts of your unit. It absorbs the heat from the air inside your home and gets rid of it.

But it’s also the AC unit that’s outside. So, it’s very prone to getting dirty and damaged. When that happens, the system uses more energy. That means higher energy bills.

And, the system won’t work as well. Your house won’t get enough cool air, and the humidity levels inside will rise. You risk the entire system breaking down if it’s left unchecked.

Inspect The Blower Belt And Blower Motor

Put together, these components circulate the air through your house. As you can imagine, they’re essential. And, as moving parts, they’re also prone to wear and tear.

During the tune up, an HVAC contractor may replace these parts before the break. If they look especially worn, it’s only a matter of time before they stop working.

It’s much cheaper to replace them in advance and while we’re already there. Otherwise, you’ll pay more for another service call later. And, that one break can cause other, more expensive problems.

Inspect Wiring And Connectors

These points boil down to making sure your electrical connections are in good condition.

Frayed wiring is a common problem on outdoor units, for instance. Or pitted contactors: components damaged from excessive heat and voltage.

You can’t spot these problems visually, especially without taking the unit apart. And, dealing with them yourself can be dangerous. Our techs are required to have hours of electrical work under their belt to be certified for this.

How Much Does An Air Conditioner Tune Up Cost?

At John Cipollone, an air conditioner tune up costs $185 for homes in Havertown, Ardmore, Bryn Mwar, and other Main Line towns. In the next section, we’ll explain all the benefits that make it worth the cost. For now, we’ll tell you how to get even more bang for your buck.

Instead of paying for an AC tune up on its own, you can enroll in a service plan that gets you even more services. Along with the tune up in the spring, you get:

  • A furnace tune up in the fall
  • Priority service during the busy seasons
  • Discounts on parts and labor

A service plan with John Cipollone only costs $185 – the same as the tune-up on its own.

Why Is Regular HVAC Maintenance Important?

  • Keep The Warranty Valid

Better Efficiency

An air conditioner that’s in great shape uses less electricity than one that’s been neglected. Better energy efficiency means lower energy bills.

Fewer Repair Costs

When an HVAC tech spots excessive wear and tear during an inspection, he can fix the problem before it causes a more significant – and more costly – breakdown.

An AC repair costs much more than routine maintenance. And, keeping the system in good shape will extend the life of the unit.

Better Indoor Air Quality

When your central air is in great shape, it’s helping to keep the air inside your home clean. You’ll have more comfortable humidity levels and less dust in the house.

Keep The Warranty Valid

Read the fine print if your HVAC system is still under warranty. You may be required to have it maintained by a professional for the warranty to stay valid.

That’s especially important on products such as ductless mini splits or high-end conventional equipment.

Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Service

If it’s already summer, you can still get your maintenance done for the season! And, if you notice any of these problems, call for air conditioner service before things get worse:

  • Weak Airflow Throughout The House

  • Unusual Sounds Coming From The System

  • AC Blows Warm Air Instead Of Cool Air

  • Temperature Is Very Different From Room To Room

We go into more detail about these and other problems in other articles on our site. Or, you can call us directly if you’re concerned.

Great reminder! Even if you don’t suspect any problems with your air conditioning unit, heating and cooling experts know that it’s a good idea to have it inspected, serviced and cleaned once a year to ensure it operates at peak energy efficiency and is ready to cool your house during the months when you need it most.

Kopernikas Green - August 2, 2021

The general rule of thumb when it comes to the frequency of AC tune-ups is once a year. If you have an older unit in your home, however, Then expert recommend getting a tune-up twice a year. The older the unit, the more love and care it needs to ensure it can last you through the warm summer months.

Jamie Wilson - December 29, 2021

For AC tune-ups I think it depends on the age of the unit like Kopernikas mentioned, still a good read nonetheless. Thanks John Cipollone.

Vivian Black - March 31, 2022

I appreciate your information about how the best time for an air conditioner check-up is in the spring. I agree this is a good time because it is before it is going to be used in the summer. You are probably right about how summer is the time when the HVAC company gets busy. Maintenance has not been done on my AC for at least 2 years. We got too busy last year, so we let it go. For sure, we will call an AC maintenance professional before summer.
