Locating Your Circuit Breaker Box
The first step is to locate your circuit breaker box. Normally this is in your basement or garage. It looks like a metal box on the wall with a door on the front of it. Simply find the box and open the front door to get started checking out your power.
Locating The Right Breakers
Once you’ve gotten the box open, you will want to find the right breakers. Sometimes there is a guide on the inside of the door to which breaker controls what in the house. In lots of cases, there are homemade labels next to each breaker, marking what each one controls.
Look over the breakers carefully and find the one you are looking for. In this example, we are trying to find the one for the air conditioner. If the AC isn’t turning on, one of the first things we tell people to look for is the power supply. If for some reason the breaker tripped, your air conditioner may not be receiving enough electricity to work.
Finding A Tripped Breaker
Now that you are getting familiar with the breaker box, you hopefully were able to find the right breaker. In lots of cases, the labels are tough to read or wrong. This honestly isn’t the worst thing in the world.
What you should be looking for is a breaker that isn’t pushed toward the middle of the breaker box. If the switch is pushed toward the inside, that means the power is going to that breaker. If the switch is neutral and not pushed left or right, it means that the breaker has been tripped, and isn’t receiving power anymore.
If you see a tripped breaker, this could be the culprit and the reason you aren’t getting power. Flip the breaker back to the center and retry your air conditioner. If it works fine and stays functioning you have fixed the issue.
If the breaker is pushed toward the middle and your AC still isn’t working, you will want to call an expert to see what the problem is. If the breaker keeps tripping, you will also want to call in an expert. Clearly there is a power issue if you keep tripping the circuit breaker.
When Should You Check Your Breaker Box?
If you experience a power outage, check your breaker box after the power comes back on. Make sure nothing tripped and has to be reset.
Also if you are having power issues with any particular room or appliance, including your air conditioner, check your breaker box. If the power isn’t being sent to that spot, that’s the reason it’s not working.
As we said before, if you continually trip the circuits in your breaker, don’t ignite the issue. Make sure you have an expert come out and take a look at your electrical work. The last thing you want is unsafe electrical connections in your home, or problems with your appliances!
