Choosing A New Air Conditioning System
If you are choosing a new air conditioning system for your home, here are some of the things you should be thinking about and researching.
What Type Of Cooling System Do You Want?
There are different types of air conditioning systems, and options based on what your home needs. Not every home or homeowner is the same, and different types of cooling systems may suit your needs better.
Heat Pumps
When people hear heat pump, they think of heating. The truth is, these systems have the ability to both heat and cool your home. They are energy efficient, and one of the best options to replace an old air conditioning system with. A heat pump can keep your home comfortable all year long, no matter what the weather is like outside, be it hot or cold.
Heat pumps have become the most popular option to replace an AC system. They use the same ductwork as air conditioners and furnaces, are simple to install, and treat the entire home!
Ductless Mini Splits
Ductless mini splits operate similarly to heat pumps, with the ability to heat and cool. Unlike traditional heat pumps, they require no ductwork. You install a condenser outside that connects to the head units inside through a small bit of tubing. The process cuts down on any lost energy that may leak in your ductwork, and is perfect for homes that don’t have room for ductwork.
The mini splits also operate independently of each other, meaning you can have them set at different temperatures. One can be at 70, the other at 65, and the other may be turned off. It allows you to make everyone in the house happy, and also save energy by not treating those unused spaces.
Mini splits are whisper quiet, energy efficient, and simple to install. We are seeing more and more homeowners elect to go with ductless mini splits over more traditional systems, and with good reason!
Traditional Air Conditioning Systems
A traditional air conditioning system is a dependable, reliable option to keep your home cool and comfortable. Lots of homes in our area have dependable heating systems, and you may not need an HVAC system that both heats and cools.
Carrier cooling systems are a great option, and one that we frequently recommend. They offer high efficiency units that can cool your home, while using as little energy as possible. This is often done using variable speed systems that can higher and lower their output to use the right amount of energy that will keep you cool. Our experts at John Cipollone Inc. have installed so many Carrier systems that we know the brand in and out!
Choosing An Efficient Cooling System
When choosing a new air conditioner, don’t ignore energy efficiency. Cooling systems have a SEER rating that shows you how efficient your system is. This stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient your system will perform. This is going to lead to lower energy bills, and better comfort.
The higher the SEER rating, the more expensive the cooling system is going to be to install. Still, this is going to be offset by the lower energy bills in the long run. We always recommend choosing the more energy efficient option when possible!
When Should You Replace Your AC?
It’s not always an exact science when it comes to when you should replace your air conditioner. There are a few factors, some obvious and some not so much, that could impact your decision to replace your AC system.
How Long Does An AC Last?
Air conditioning systems generally last between 15-20 years. With proper maintenance and care, they can last up to 20, but without it, you may see it not even get to the 10 year mark. In general you want your AC to last a decade if possible. But, once it hits the 10-12 year mark, you will want to be READY to replace it if needed.
As long as the system is still working efficiently, you should keep using it! We recommend that if you run into a problem with your AC once it gets to this point, you should look into a replacement instead of repairing it, depending on the cost. More on that in a bit.
Your Home Isn’t Cooling Off
The most common and obvious reason you’d want to replace your air conditioner is that your home isn’t cool enough. If your home isn’t cooling off, make sure to consult a professional first. There could be a repair needed, or you may simply need your system serviced. If they take a look at your system, and nothing seems to be working, it may be time to replace your air conditioner.
Your Energy Bills Are Far Too High
If you have an aging AC system, it may lose energy efficiency, and begin to use too much energy to keep your space cool. If that’s the case, you should once again call a professional. You may need to change your air filter, service your AC, or replace a part. There may also be issues with your ductwork.
A professional will be able to let you know if regular service will take care of the air conditioner, or if you are going to need to replace the system.
In certain instances, the old system may be losing efficiency, but the older technology may also be a problem. Newer air conditioners are designed with energy efficiency in mind, and more environmentally friendly options. Replacing the old air conditioner may help improve comfort, and also significantly lower your energy bills.
Your System Needs Expensive Repairs
If your AC system is in need of a repair, you should consider a few factors.
- How old is your AC? Does it need to be replaced soon anyway?
- How expensive is the repair?
- How often are repairs needed? Is it the first time?
If the repair is cheap and quick, it may be the better option. But on the other hand, if the repair is expensive, and the air conditioning system likely needs to be replaced soon anyway, it may be time to look into estimates for new cooling systems.
